Lem said in a recent interview: Now the Americans are going to make another of my books into a film. But I have not given my consent.

However, note that Lem said Americans; the film cited above is from Hungary.

Well done Ritch!  ;)

Maybe this film will be only financed by americans, because in Hungary there are movie studios where they can make films at low costs (even they are going to built something like small hollywood here).
By the way, I don´t like hungarian movies. Let me hope it will be exception.

One Human Minute? How could this become a movie? I can't imagine how this should work or how the outcome would be... Well there is no story in the commmon sense, no characters... Am I wrong?

This is certainly the last book of Lem that I thought to be turned into a movie.  ???

hungarian feature film

producer: Zoltán Kamondi

production company: Honeymood Films

---------------------
SYNOPSIS

Stanislav Lem's short story, "One Human Minute" is the review of a fictitious book of the same title. The author, posing as a critic, reviews an almanac type of book, which tries to summarize and present all that happens to mankind in one minute by condensing it all into numbers.
Lem picks random chapters from the fictive book to illustrate this, and also adds his associative pictures to them in his commentaries, examining their social consequences and reactions, both on a material and an intellectual level. Thus the short story does not tell a story, but philosophizes, staying within the limits of science fiction.

The story is visually abstracted, but the voice of the personified narrator guides the audience in a special way within its world, mixed with the reality of our times. In the beginning he is incognito, as a storyteller who is outside the story, but as the plot develops we realize that he is the author himself.
With the help of the adapted text and with the story I created, the fictitious book comes to life, appearing as a film, in a visual form, thus the author of the book by turn becomes the director of the film.

The story starts in a bookstore somewhere, in the 21st century. The three-member staff (MANAGER, OWNER, CLEANER) is just about to close, when at the request of a last, mysterious customer (READER) they go back to the storage room for a book, leaving the CLEANER behind. Once in the storage room, they are bumbfound at seeing that the whole stock has been replaced by copies of an insignificant looking book. They cannot find anything else, even in the untouched packages on the pallets.
When they return to the shop they are shocked to see that the books that were there a minute ago, have disapperaed without a trace, and the shelves are packed with the same book. The situation is absurd: a miracle had happened.
Although the CLEANER is the only witness, he is still under the influence of having experienced a miracle; and does not speak. Thus the only starting point in understanding the unusual "criminal offence" is the book with a puritan cover, where neither the author, nor the publisher is indicated, only the title: "One Human Minute".
The almanac-style book introduces us to what happens to the whole of mankind in the time 1 minute goes by.

The book store is secured by the state police and an investigation is started in the middle of the night. While they are still questioning the four people concerned and looking for possible clues, the surprisingly well informed media arrive and demand more information. The source of the book is untraceable, and nobody can trace its origins down.

As a result of this event, the book becomes world-famous in a second, and although it is a piece of evidence, it is reprinted and translated. It becomes a bestseller.
The more extensive the investigation, the more mysteries it faces; the four people also become suspicious. The investigation continuously takes different directions, so the book becomes the subject of extreme controversies in all segments of society.

Politics, science, religion and art gets involved in the "hysteria" around the book, demanding the liable person: the author. But the author only exists outside the story as a narrator, he is present only for the audience. From the centre of this "quadruple polarity", he maps the self-contradictions of the four interests by his book and its story.
The four characters (MANAGER, OWNER, CLEANER and READER) all have different approaches to the situation, while in the spotlights of the media all four turn into mythical figures.
The book and its consequences both insult and legitimise politics, science, religion and art, thus the interested groups try to get the four characters, as they are expecting them to make the public opinion favourable for them in the limelight of pressing publicity. Either accepting or rejecting the book, they are "thrown" from one group to the other, all the time following the aspects of the author's book.

Religion tries to corrupt the READER (mystic hermit), but since his demand for reality is much too superior, he does not give in; so they kidnap him and manipulate his statements towards the public. When he escapes, he is forced to stay hidden.
The CLEANER (a young boy), the eyewitness, becomes a key person for Arts, as other interest groups cannot make use of his mysterious character. The Arts, however, interpret him arbitrarily, making a clown of him.
The only unachievable dream of the OWNER (rich male) is the MANAGER (female), who, although in love, is unable to give herself to him. Each of their steps in the story is about the other, their agony is the endless fight of the two sexes. The OWNER sells himself out to Science, the MANAGER to Power; but because both become defenceless, they collapse.
Their personal tribulations change them one by one: they all understand the miracle. They realise that they are only imaginary characters, the world where their destiny takes place only exists in the imagination of the author.

DIRECTOR'S CONCEPT

The script would be constructed from three different threads, which, as a "braid", would form the basis of the film's structure. Almost every sentence of the original short story can be turned into a sequence, thus, my intentions are to adapt all such thoughts and association of ideas, which can be visually supported by any of the three threads detailed below.

The first and determining thread is a narration that serves alienation. In the film the narrator keeps up a permanent contact with the audience.
We never see the narrator in the film, we only hear his voice, nevertheless, he is a protagonist, since all actions, motivations and reactions are directly caused by his book, thus indirectly by him.
Rising above the fictive reality of the film, he is able to provide insight into events where he is not present, furthermore, he can influence these events, modifying the direction of the film and the characters' complete scale of emotions.
Thus he is not only a character and (together with us) a spectator of events. He is the director at the same time.
The narrator/author/director alternately presents the destiny and the ideas of the book - chapter by chapter, in an illustrative way. He often wanders off the subject, referring back or forward in the story, sometimes making further associations. By doing so, the locations, characters and their actions come into view several times but only for short periods of time, which creates the fast rhythm of the film.
The form is composed of shots of fictive scenes, thematically based on the short story text, or on the four characters. Although due to the narrator, watching a film will be relevant for the recipient, it is thanks to him, that the audience becomes pervaded by the story, and unavoidable for the audience to feel as an outsider. He has to almost become a part of what he is watching.
The second thread is based exclusively on original archive material; newsreels, real fragments of documentaries will be visually implanted into fiction. On the one hand, this converts the scenes into reality, on the other hand, it strengthens the reality of the abstract world.
The third structural thread can be best described as a fusion of the other two, where the reactions to the fictive book are evoked from the world of fiction, using the method of fake documentary films. In these scenes the border between reality and fiction are blurred, and one becomes the other, if you will, since we witness the events within the reality of the film, then beyond it.

The complicated fabric of the film would be expanded by "sixty seconds" of different situations of life, selected eclectically.
The scenes would report the experiences of either different characters in different locations or a 1-minute-situation experienced differently by people in the same place.
The analysis of the chapters is always ended by a summary. The film ends with the final supplement of summarized scenes.
The book within the film remains a review, but only as an allegory. It helps to point out that the final product of the human spirit is the perception that nothing can be analyzed on its own. No critical problem can be solved isolated. Every question is a question of mankind.
The power of the author's personality comes from him being alone. The only difference between him and everybody else is that he is fully aware of the fact that he is no different from anybody else. The world he has insulted requires an explanation. The author makes the world look into a mirror, and the world protests against what it sees. The audience, can experience the events on side of the author.
At the end of the film the audience either knows, understands and believes that the author is "everybody at the same time" or, by loosing him, may become indignant - with himself. Thus the author appears as collective remorse. His provocation does not come from a hidden passivity, but from the fact that the book he's written is true. He believes that every action serves the materialization of the truth.

The four "bookshop characters" and their changes are showns by major steps. Their view of the world, and their violently changing interests identify a given part with the whole. Using different routes, they ultimately arrive to a point, where they realize that the right way is to adept all points of view. Although these four characters require more detailed elaboration, their analogy fits the chapters of the short story as they are.
The most interesting among them is the READER, SWAN TAMEL (the hermit). A man of about 60, a lonely wanderer in the world, who feels he belongs to another, invisible world. He visits the bookshop because in his dreams he has already been already there. His way of thinking is axiomatic and theoretic, thus more powerful than that of the other characters. He does not believe that anything can be understood in an impersonal way. He is not surprised by the miracle, he can consciously fit it into his world. He investigates in his own way; waiting until things reveal themselves. Religion tries to present him as a prophet, but since he does not co-operate, they are forced to kidnap him and manipulate his statements.

Uhm... This looks quite promising. Nevertheless, it seems to be a movie about this book and partially based on the book. That, of course, is not a problem:)

I think that this movie realisation can be pretty endulging, but on the other hand, I am little afraid...
'Cause can't one make such movie about any book?
