Now that's a piece of good interview, isn't it ? Too bad it's so short, however :(
I especially liked the part 'bout there being 'nothing' on Moon and Mars. That's just to true not to be seen.
Of course, I'm a dreamer, for I've not completely grown out of this, and therefore thoughts of Mars excite me greatly, but on the other hand - pretending that I don't see political meaning of this 'space crusade' is just too hard.
Anyway the interview is great! [glb]Thanks[/glb] for finding it!

Last part of the interview:
"Now the Americans are going to make another of my books into a film. But I have not given my consent."
Do you know which one it could be? Niezwyciezony?
-
Here is fictitious review on Spielberg´s movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. It is filmed book Powrot z gwiazd. Author was inspired by Doskonala Proznia-reviews on non-exist books. It´s very well written, I thought it is true till the end :) Unfortunatelly, it is in czech.

God's sake, man, what other languages do you speak?
Finnish?
-
it's not the number of languages one speaks that matters; its what's one says in them that does. Alas, therein lies my hubris.
cheers, socrates
-
Hehe, right. Anyway, I assume you speak Finnish as well :)
-
You should write which languages you can´t speak. It will be easier ;)
-
I think he's figured it out by now, but it must be hard for him to think of such language. Swahili, maybe?
-
I am conversant in the following: Polish, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Unkrainian; I'm working on Portugese and Urdu. Finnish sounds nice, though.
Cheers, Socrates
-
Knew You're not into Finnish !! (Urdu... heavenly Jesus...)
-
Socrates you said you speak German.
Welchen Eindruck erweckt sie dir?
It's interesting how they seem you in one line with other languages.
In which language you form your thoughts?
And another question, not easy to answer:
You think its possible to think logically without speech?
My respect for speaking so much languages
-
Welchen Eindruck erweckt sie dir?
You think its possible to think logically without speech?
1. What do you mean? Are you German? Was erweckt welchen Eindruck?
2. Thinking without words: I can! I often think in pictures or something quite hard to discribe... something like feelings. It last only some seconds like a lightning or such a thing. And often I think and feel "colours". Well, I just can't explain it and I don't expect anyone to understand me. :(

You think its possible to think logically without speech?
Of course; the thoughts that remain unverbalized are no worse than the others.
-
Each language has its own peculiarities which I like. Polish is great for swearing and making grand-sounding phrases. English and German are logical. Spanish is pleasant to speak. French I talk to my girlfriend with, and nothing can match it. Russian and Ukrainian are like a variation on Polish, which makes them interesting. I don't know enough of Portugese to have an opinion on it. Urdu is just messed up, but getting to be fun in its own way.
I don't think in a language, I think in ideas. Language is simply an expression of the thoughts. As others who speak various languages may attest to, the formulation of words in a language comes after whatever wants to be said was already thought of.
I believe it is perfectly possible to think logically without speech. Think of a game of chess. I'm pretty sure people, in their minds, don't do the following "if I move my knight to f6 the bishop on g5 can take it, thus...etc". The variations is chess are far too many, and far too complex, to allow speech to come in. Rather, the ideas present in chess - the pins, double checks, etc - are thought, and they consistute the "language" (but not "speech" per se), so to speak, of the thoughts.
Cheers, Socrates

Polish is great for swearing
YYYEEEEAAAHHH

I am looking for translator from finnish... :(
-
Well don't count on me, I'm only good when it gets to swearing in Polish.
But Socrates, he's your man.
-
Yes, but i will have to wait a couple weeks until Socrates ends Finnish course...
-
I am looking for translator from finnish... :(

Anyone speaks German? "Intelligenz ist im Grunde ihres Wesens ungesund" claims to be the very last interview with Stanislaw Lem, conducted by Patrick Grossmann on November 15, 2005.
