Star Diaries - two translations?
« dnia: Stycznia 08, 2005, 01:10:54 am »
I want to buy Lem's Star Diaries for my British friend, but on Amazon I've found two books with almost the same title: Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy, and Memoirs of a Space Traveler: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy. They have different number of pages (286 and 152). What is the difference, is it just two translation of Star Diaries? I live in Sweden and cannot check it.
Can somebody explain it to me?

Certainly:
There are two translations, but you only saw one.  The entire Star Diaries book has been split into two parts, one translated by Michael Kandel, and the other by a team whose last names I forget.  What you've seen was simply the two volumes of the same book (with different stories, of course).  The work done by Michael Kandel is superb; the other is less so.
But there does exists another version, done by yours truly, which is unavailable in bookstores for the simple reason that it is technically illegal, not endorsed by Lem (though he apparently did like it somewhat), and will not be published because Faber &Faber is not interested in publishing it.
Cheers, Socrates

Another version? By whom? You? Tell me more, please!

Haha, isn't that obvious ? Socrates, of course, translated it himself !

Shame on Faber&Faber !

If it's not available in stores, maybe it's available in some other way?  ;)
I mean the other translation.

1) Send me an email at noveltrans@hotmail.com.
2) Clean up some space in your mail box
3) Send me another email telling me that you have 100kb of space or so
4) Check your email the next week after
5) Read what you've been sent
6) Let me know what you think.  Be as brutal or praiseworthy as you wish.

Cheers, Socrates

From Michael Kandel's 'Translator's Note' in The Star Diaries:
Cytuj
My translation was done from the 1971 Polish fourth edition. It does not include the Memoirs of Ijon Tichy (to which group The Futurological Congress, The Seabury Press, 1974, belongs), where the action takes place on Earth, nor the Eighteenth Voyage (in which Tichy is responsible—or rather, to blame—for creating the world), nor the Twenty-fourth. The latter can be found in Darko Suvin's Other Worlds, Other Seas, Random House, 1970. There was a Twenty-sixth Voyage too, a cold war satire, which the author later discarded, more for esthetic than political reasons. Also, the last few pages of the Twenty-second Voyage have been omitted.
Does anyone know why the Eighteenth Voyage and the last few pages of the Twenty-second were omitted?

Was the Twenty-sixth Voyage published before Lem discarded it and will it ever see the light of day?

Hi, guys.
I'm in a desperate need of the English translation of the 8th Voyage and the 21st Voyage. I've already bought Star Diaries from amazon.co.uk but the book will probably arrive too late, and I really need these two short stories as soon as possible. Would anybody be so kind as to send me scans? I'd be immensely grateful! My e-mail: l3mol0g@gazeta.pl

I'm begging you all: if anybody knows how to contact either Socrates or Terminus, please let me know.
I'm writing my MA thesis on translating neologisms, and I would like to use example from translation done by Socrates.
