Well, 'researcher', in my opinion, wouldn't go right with 'uczony'. I'd rather say that 'uczony' says not much more than that the person knows a LOT. And that's basically it.
This world is nowadays almost out of use, but when it appears, it has this meaning.
In Lem's writings, however, it meant 'scientist'.

Native English speakers, please correct me if my intuitions are wrong:

1. Researcher ("badacz") is someone who carries out the research.
2. Scholar ("uczony"), as I understand this word, is someone who belongs to academia.
However, http://dictionary.reference.com/ says: Scholar: a learned person (especially in the humanities); someone who by long study has gained mastery in one or more disciplines.
3. Scientist ("naukowiec") is actually the same as researcher. A person who 'does science'. A profession.

obwarować is to fortify (in Polish)
but in Russian

obvarovat' means - to rob (a house)

Doesn't it come from the gangster slang?

If so, there may be a link between "obwarować" and "obvarovat' " :
"warować" may mean "to watch, to guard", like a dog, for example. But "to watch" or even "to watch patiently" seems to be a better translation.

Now from the viewpoint of a robber,  his work must be preceded by a longer observation of a house to be robbed.  Which means patient watching but from the other side of walls, so to say.

This explanation may be reasonable. (Native Polish speakers, please compare with "obczaić").

kilkunastu can be a part of a sentence like kilkunastu naukowców which is a few dozens of scientists. So You're right, it's "several tens". The most general form of this quatifier is kilkanaście.

Ehm, are you really Polish?
"kilkunastu" means of course "somewhere in the teens". In other words: "a number between 11 and 19".

What he may mean is that some scientists are inspired by Lem on a daily basis. That doesn't necesarily have to yield the specific discoveries.

Which means that it is not a SCIENTIFIC inspiration. It may be at most a philosophical one. Lem is not a researcher. He may be considered a philosopher, but not a scientist in the sense of natural science.

How do you inspire...

The only inspiration in my work are the discoveries of other scientists.

...a serious discovery...?

Not yet. When I receive the Nobel prize, I will tell you.

I`m afraid You are wrong...
St. Lem isn`t  a researcher himself obviously, however scientists from very many countries all over the world have been inspired by his books for a few dozen years (trust me )

:-) I am a scientist myself. Trust me. :-)

Please give me an example of ANY scientific discovery made under inspiration of Lem.

czytalam dawno temu, lat kilka wrecz, ze Lem czegos szczerze zaluje, zaluje bowiem, ze ujawnil przed czlowiekiem tajemnice Drzewa, ktora ten teraz wykorzystuje przeciwko samemu sobie, slowem dazy do samozniszczenia.

Myślę, że Bogu Ojcu Lemowi chodziło o Drzewo Wiadomości Dobrego i Złego...

Tak sobie myślę... Skoro Lem jest podobno taki uniwersalny, że nieważne są szczegóły technologiczne a liczy się tylko Przesłanie... to po co on w ogóle pisał SF ?? Mógł równie dobrze napisać książki bez żadnego futurologicznego sztafażu, z samym tylko Przesłaniem!

Ja się obawiam, że on jednak wkrótce odjedzie do muzeum razem z tą całą XX-wieczną techniką... a wtedy przestanie być interesujący i z Nobla nici...  :-/

[P.S. Mnie osobiście będzie szkoda...]

Unfortunately, I do know.
I read his first book of "Rama" series.
This was exactly what I mean by "wrong initial conditions".

I remember a particularly amusing fragment on how the high temperature moves through a spaceship's wall. If you know a thing or two about thermodynamics, you will see where the mistake is. As far as I remember that event was very important to the whole story. But if it is wrong, then the whole story becomes unrealistic.

 I don`t agree, read H.Harrison or P.Dick and yo will see that Lem`s books are more or less scientific and futuristic.
  What do you think about works of Arthur Clarke are they actually scientific.

They are not "scientific" as well as Lem's books are not.
I have written about the INTELLIGENT EXTRAPOLATION of today's state of science and technology to the future. The difference between Lem and the writers you listed is that Lem was able at least to take correct initial conditions. In other words, he knew quite well what is the state of the contemporary scientific knowledge.  Unlike the other writers who didn't even know what is going on in science in their days. And then they wrote things which were in contradiction with science already at the time when the book was being written.

No. Bez przesady. Jest jeden przykład - nie anachronizmu, lecz raczej rażącej niedoróbki myślowej autora: Jak oni zrobili sztuczny stan nieważkości w rakiecie stojącej w hangarze ("Test")

a) Mieli takie przyszłościowe urządzenia antygrawitacyjne? Wtedy wszystkie przygody pilota Pirxa należałoby o kant rozbić.  Świat z takimi urządzeniami wyglądałby grubo inaczej.

b) Wsadzili kabinę po cichu do samolotu, który tak fajnie nurkuje, że robi się stan nieważkości? Nic z tego: takim samolotem nie można sterować tak dowolnie, jak rakietą w kosmosie, żeby na przemian uzyskiwać raz przeciążenia, a raz nieważkość. Tymczasem podczas testu PIrxem nieźle trzepało. Niestety, zamysł tego opowiadania nadaje się do kosza

How scientific are Lem´s texts?

I am writing a book about science in polish and russian science fiction. What about Lem´s scientific ideas? Are they innovative, are they accurate...?

They are not actually scientific.
Scientific theories are based on mathematics (like in physics)  or at least on logical reasoning (like in biology) AND on experiment.

Lem does not know too much about mathematics, nor does he do experiments. All he can do is to intelligently extrapolate the information read in "New Scientist" etc. or gained from his physicist friends. And, since he was (still is?) an extraordinarily intelligent person, his predictions were not  too much divergent from reality. (In a time scale as short as tens of years, of course.) But he did not really "invent" anything new.

Żeby nie było, że na tym forum poprzestaję na omawianiu komunikacji miejskiej: Porozmawiajmy o anachronizmach technologicznych u Lema.
Czy przeszkadzają w tzw. odbiorze dzieła?
Ile do dziś zostało w tych książkach technologii "przyszłościowych", jeszcze nie zrealizowanych?
Czy gdy wszystkie się już zdezaktualizują, to Lem stanie się jako ci autorzy ksiąg o kanałach na Marsie?

Ja np. lubię czytać książki Lema na zasadzie historii alternatywnej. Co by było, gdyby nie dokonano niektórych wynalazków, a za to rozwijano inne??

...Rozczula mnie np. historia, jak Pirx spotkał UFO, ale nie mógł tego zapisać, bo... zabrakło mu taśmy perforowanej!
