Have you already noticed this? I just tried it, and it's really hard... the german titles of Lem's book are often totaly diferent from the englisch, so I don't even know what is what...
The covers are supposed to give a hint to what the title is. I believe the turkish titles are totally diferent again and the covers fit to them. But I enjoyed guessing.

Are there more quizzes about Lem one could take?

Tell me something

Well, in case one doesn't know Lem's books by heart, he (or she) can be asked to explain some of Lem's abbreviations: from stories about Tarantoga, for example, or about Ijon Tihij (sorry, i'm not sure with the spelling). They are very funny, and the explanation is always unexpectable.

But

1) it's quite difficult to guess:

2) one can easily find it in books.

And there is surely the problem with translation. I've no idea how this abbreviations look in English or in German (coz i read Lem in Russian).

You're english is perfectly right, I think.

I don't believe I have a chance but I would love most "The Futurological Congress", my favourite book (of Lem and on general). Any other book does as well I think, but Kongress is something special to me... it was the first of Lem's books I read and instantly became my favourite...
I would die for such an authograph. My greatest dream is meeting him once, or writing a letter that he answers... well, dreams.

Well... English speaking people don't know that, but in the Polish section a new quiz was started, winner of which can meet Lem in person. I myself am not anticipating this time. The meeting will take place in Poland, therefore, I guess, it has a local character and that's why it's only announced in the Polish section.

The task is to describe Lem's influence on one's mind/thoughts (meaning Lem's books' influence) in no more than 100 words.

Neat ::)

Wow, congratulations ! At last! I was just about to give up on Lem's management... But since You finally got it, it's green.

But wait, You wish to learn Polish? Did they give You the Polish edition of Summa? Heh, that's somewhat cruel... Well, I mean of course Polish is a wonderful language (how could I say different, being Polish) but it's extremely hard to learn... Who knows - maybe they're encouraging You !!

Unfortunatelly I'm not familiar with any Polish internet course:) Well... you should start from basics... naa... no such courses or books (for adults) in Poland.

Anyway - I'm happy for You:) Keep it tight

Well, in fact I asked the book in polish. I'm from México, and already have all his books traslated to spanish, and some others traslated to english (but not to spanish). So, why to ask another one in spanish?

Besides, there is no versión of Summa in spanish neither english. Since I dont read german or russian, I think the better option for this book is polish.

it's extremely hard to learn

Do you think? Well, few hours ago I checked the polish phonetics and it seem simpler than english.

Hey, wait a minute, I just read this in other site: The Polish language is, with good reason, said to be the most difficult language in the world.    :(
Tytuł: Re: "Win a book autographed by Stanislaw Lem&
Wiadomość wysłana przez: Terminus w Maja 21, 2005, 01:48:44 am
Well I didn't know Summa hasn't been translated into english... Hm...

As for Polish - just to cheer You up - reading in Polish is not as hard as speaking (that is mostly because we have, in our language's phonetics, some few 'suprises' - a lingual phones, that people from abroad can't even imagine :) some hissing ones, and so on...). That is, for example, why when the new Pope was chosen (Benedict XVI), when he prepared to speak his first words in Polish, his Polish cooperators re-arranged his speech into the form, where some of the most difficult phrases were ommited and replaced with easier ones. Of course I bet he would deal with it anyway :) but it is said he didn't want to take the risk at the very beginning of his pontificate :)
It is said that every nation has problems with different part of Polish phonetics :) As You can imagine, it makes us proud as hell !
Nevertheless, I think reading will be somewhat easier than speaking. Well... it is anyway little difficult, because Polish is a slavonic language, whereas Spanish has completely different origins.

Anyway, I wish you good luck and cross my fingers for you. I can always help You to translate some sentence or word if you wish.

In the beginning You can find it amusing to translate a few Polish words to english. You can do it  here  (http://portalwiedzy.onet.pl/tlumacz.html). You just have to type the Polish world into the dialog box next to the word ,,Szukaj". Have fun.

Congratulations Ricardo, you are a lucky man;
I can understand your wish to learn Polish just to read Lem's books. I thinked about learning German myself because nearly all Lem's works are translated and published in that language (specially Summa technologiae! :) ) Sadly I am quite bad learning languages, so I will have to buy the rest of the books available in English.
Lem himself learned English just to read "Star maker" from Olaf Stapledon (incredible book), with the book in one hand and the dictionary in the other. Although I guess you all already knew that. :)

Learning german is easier than the slavonic and caucasian languages and most of the roman ones, too, i believe! It doesn't have this strange letters with ^ above (or something else, or under it, or crossed through it *g*) and a clear structured grammar. Also a clear pronounciation (which isn't the case in englisch and frensh).
*g* enjoy!
Tytuł: Re: "Win a book autographed by Stanislaw Lem&
Wiadomość wysłana przez: peskanov w Maja 21, 2005, 09:24:37 pm
Maybe it is (easier), but certainly the pronunciation is a problem for a person who speaks Romanic languages. I speak Spanish, which has few phonetic sounds, and the correspondence between spoken and written is very simple.
However, English is quite dificult to pronounce just looking a text, and German seems equally dificult to me. Reading and pronouncing a word like "kartoffel" seems straightforward, but reading "Deutschland" is a puzzle to me. In Spanish, earing that word, I would write something like "dossland" or "doschland", but I would probably lose some nuances.

Lucky you, Germans can enjoy Lem's complete works in their native tongue! :)
I hope someday all books will be translated to English at least. I throw the towel with the Spanish translations, it's already a miracle we have around 17 books available.

Naaa... it's not that bad. Writing and reading is the hardest part, all because of the complicated notification system. It surely is simpler than in Chinese, nevertheless... there are many attractions ::) As in any semitic language, you write from right to left, writing only the consonants (the vowels are omitted, or (easy variant) their placement is indicated by some special marks).  Interesting thing is, that the shape of the letter depends on where it is situated in the word.

And the letters themselves are very beatifull, in my personal opinion. As a matter of fact, Arabic is (when it comes to rules and writing) very similar to Yiddish.

Of course, I am an absolute beginner.

Simply not every of Lem's books gets translated & published (word published should be emphasized, as I've heard from Socrates, even when one translates a book to English he cannot find a willing publisher) , because the editors are afraid they're not gonna make any profit out of it.
Tytuł: Re: "Win a book autographed by Stanislaw Lem&
Wiadomość wysłana przez: Socrates w Maja 28, 2005, 08:21:17 pm
Yeah, a pity about the editors, but hey, it's a labour of love to translate (at least for me).  I know a few fluent spanish-polish speakers, who've learned polish as a second language, so it's not entirely impossible.  But you will need a serious drive to do it as the grammar rules and tenses  are quite brutal in Polish.  On the other hand, by learning Polish you will be exposed to a vast wealth of amazing literature (both SF and not - Sienkiewicz, Gombrowicz, others).  As well, you will find yourself understanding much of Russian, Chech and even Croatian, as the languages are all very similar (which means you'll have no problem learning them, and which therefore means that you'll be exposed to a part of the world which is quite unlike any other on our globe).  Think of the benefits, and think of the drawbacks - perhaps a year of study to reap the benefits of multilingualism and to gain an understanding of Poles and Slavs altogether.
Good luck,
Cheers,
Socrates

Tytuł: Re: "Win a book autographed by Stanislaw Lem&
Wiadomość wysłana przez: Deckard w Stycznia 31, 2006, 12:17:55 pm
This question was addressed to Terminus, but since I have a little time now, I'll try to answer it:

wychynęłaby
przezeń

These two words seem to be logically situated (I'm not sure if that was your purpose), because ...wychynęłaby przezeń... sounds grammatically correct. Wychynęłaby comes from wychynąć (it's not a common word, and that's why it can be hard to find it in a regular dictionary) which is very close to wychylać (to lean out). So wychynąć says to appear slowly and soon stay visible or available for a period of time. It can be also translated into emerge from something. Przezeń is also rather seldom used word which could be translated into "through something". Moreover is has to be used in a very specific context. So wychynęłaby przezeń would suggest that something (of a feminine gender) would emerge from something. Jecie is taken out of context but it looks like it's a part of a sentence similar to: wy jecie coś - you eat something. So it comes from the verb jeść which means to eat.

PS.
Do you really learn Polish?

PPS.
Terminus please extend or correct my explaination if you want. I'm sure some thing can be improved or clarified in more detail.

Thanks, Deckard!

wychynęłaby was found in „z której ludzkość wychynęłaby zdziesiątkowana”. I'm assuming that zdziesiątkowana means "decimated". Would it mean then the decimation proceeded slowly but the effects lasted for a long time?

przezeń was in „tak aby przemawiała przezeń niejako sama Natura”, where "through" sounds reasonable enough. Is it sort of like an adjectival form of przez?

jecie was in „wprowadził po jecie „neutrina””, which makes sense, but I quote it anyway as an excuse to ask how one nests quotes in Polish.

Am I learning Polish? Well, I'mtrying to. Slowly. It'd be great if it were as generally useful for me as learning English has been for you guys, but...I tell myself that everybody needs a pointless hobby or two, right?

OK. I get it now. In doesn't make any sense. It's  a mistake. It was not jecie but pojęcie. pojęcie  is an idea. So your quote in fact means "he introduced a conception/idea of a neutrino."

And now for sth completely different: the man with the tape recorder in his brother's nose.

The world:

nomotetycznych

is a declined form of the world 'nomotetyczny'. It comes from the name "nomologia" - the kind of science, called nomology in english.

Nomology, as far as I know, deals with the rules of science, rules of reality. (In this sence physics is nomological, because it discovers the laws). The contrary to nomological sciences are idiographical ones (dealing with events that are nonrepetative).

As for the 'ewaloaskiej ' I am almost sure that such world doesn't exists. It must be another mistake. You would do right to give us the context in which you found this creature ::)

You're doin' that all by yourself or you've got some teacher?

By myself.

I'd never heard of nomology.

Jesteśmy bliscy Sumeryjczykom, ale moralność człowieka kultury lewaloaskiej przeraziłaby nas.

[By the way, I don't want to give the impression that I can simply look at the quotes that I've been pasting in and remember what all of it means. I know the endings for verbs/nouns/adjectives to some degree, and I know the conjunctions and prepositions and things reasonably well, but I can't remember too many nouns or verbs...]

Now mind that

ewaloaskiej is not the same as lewaloaskiej.

(The latter being what you wrote today).

As for 'lewaloaskiej' , ti comes from the word 'lewaluaska', it's an adjective to describe a phase in the stone age. The 'lewaluaska' technique was used to break flint stones in a specific, unordinary way. The word itself comes from the archeological site in france.
I have no idea about the equivalents of such a word in english.

The latter being what I wrote both times, actually.
France, huh? Maybe if I repeat it to myself a few times, the equivalent word will come to me (assuming there is one)...

[there's Levant/Levantine. Looks like it's only used for a region, so people say "the Levantine Neolithic/Paleolithic/whatever". It sounds similar enough, anyway.]

Guess that would be it.
