Pirx and Terminus
« dnia: Kwietnia 18, 2006, 01:47:49 am »
A question for my fellow Lem fans. In Terminus, Pirx has to go by the guidelines of STP (as it's called in the Russian translation) for lift-off. I understand that STP is a government regulatory agency for space travel, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what STP actually stands for. I'm sorry, but I'm not sure of the english equivalent of the acronym.

I glanced at "Terminus" and found letters STP (in polish version) but I didn't find its translation.

Me neither.
Except that in my book it said SPT rather than STP. Of couse we can make wild guesses, but that's not what You expect, is it now.

I wonder if it is a puzzle.... Like the contents of the suitcase in Pulp Fiction.     ;D

Oh yes, it was SPT.

I'd like to know if Lem knew its meaning. I think not.

***

I have written it in Google:
1) SPT is the Regional Transport Partnership (RTP) for the west of Scotland.

2) Società Pubblica Trasporti

Does it really matter what STP stands for.The other thing is Terminus a robot with some disorder which doesnt bother him to mend the reactor and of course Pirx who was shocked by the mysterious messages of the dead spacemen trying to find the source.
Did anybody feel pity for the robot?

Ofcource. Infact I believe that it was generally Lem's style not to make a monster out of the machine. He always showed some pity and almost compassion for machines. I think that he thought that the problem was that people were careless with technology. They did not respect it.

As for STP or SPT... I'm just trying to translate some Pirx into English and wanted to get the proper definition. But you're right. In the long run what matters is the story. :)

STP is also an US brand for automobile chemicals, fuel additives etc, especially to help the start up. Perhaps Prix uses them to start his engine... ;D

Hmmm... Maybe by that time they have expanded into nuclear fuel additives? ;D

Well, it's highy unlikely for Pirx to use petrol ::)

And Metallist - I just thought of something.
Isn't 'Metallist Kharkov' a footbal team where Poland's SEWERYN GANCARCZYK plays?

Now that's sweet. And what's even sweeter, is that Ukraine qualified for the World Cup finals, didn't they?

Being in a group with Spain may be painfull, but who are we to judge, since we're going to get our butts kicked by the Germans (or do we... :)  )

That is sweet indeed. And what would be even sweeter is if I could watch the World Cup, in this (US) country, without having to subscribe to a premium channel  ::) At least you can still see some good hockey without "ESPN Europe" ::)
