I was watching volume 1 of futurama on dvd with commentary, and david x choen said the episode "fear of a bot planet" is based on a stanislw lem short story where humans land on a planet inhabited by robots, and in order to not be killed by the fearsome robots, they themselves dress like robots. does anyone know the title of the story?

Futurama rules Universe !!
I saw that episode too:] Uhm... I even own the dvd you mentioned, but it seems I missed this comentary:]
Nevertheless, I ... don't recall a story that would exactly fit this episode you kindly mentioned. Of course, Lem's books are filled with similar plots (such as a stories in ,,Mortal Engines" and many else) but...
...uhm or maybe it's my memory failing to deal with this:]
Let us hope someone else remembers:]

Hi, Bender!!
Look up in Star Diaries.
-
Well I thought about Star Diaries first. I checked it than and found nothing. That is why I said I didn't know:] And I still don't :]
Guess I didn't look hard enough :]

In czech language exists star diaries in 2 different editions and also "Vzpomínky Ijona Tichého"- part of original Star diaries.
I shoould take a look in library and find out which voyage we are looking for.

Star Diaries. I know, because I translated it. Damn good story, and damn hard to translate (those who read it in polish (or other slavic languages) know what I mean.

Hej, Bender!
Sory for this late entry. In case you haven´t read Star Diaries yet: The story is The eleventh voyage
[In futurama it is 5th episode, Fear of a bot planet, (in Czech translated as a "RUR II"), name of the planet ruled by robots is Čapek 9.]
-
Oh J.Christ, say "Čapek 9" that sounds awasome!!!
I don't know if you're aware of the fact that we, I mean Poles, consider Czech language very, very funny. In fact, when reading this "Čapek 9" formula, I've laughed myself off a chair !
I think your country must be absolutely fantastic and full of happy people - speaking such a language gives you no choice !! :) :)
Greetings

Heh, I can imagine it ;) when I am listening to Polish, half of every sentence sounds dirty to me :D "what the hell is this ˇ mark ? In Polish, it will be "Czapek", I guess.
By the way, I expect you know whose is this name. 8)

haha, that makes me proud :)

Now I've checked futurama and now I understand Čapek is not that funny as I thought, because it really is polish Czapek (Chapek in english). I initally thought it is a polish "Ciapek". Polish "Ci" sounds like... i don't know, two first letters of "Ciao" in italian.
Besides "Ciapek" is a popular polish name for a dog or cat:) So you see...
And about the name: I didn't know, but after seeing you so proud about it I figured this has to be some famous Czech autor... So I checked and found Karel Čapek:)
It's good to have foreign friends:)
greetings

Just for completeness: Karel Čapek is well known mainly because he is author of a word "ROBOT" now used in every language. (between 1920-1930, I think).
Origin is very simple - "robota" means "hard work" (I think it is the same in Polish, isn´t it?)
-
Yes it exactly is!

I've recently re-read 11th voyage/journey from Star Diaries. The similarity between this story and the plot of Futurama:Fear of a bot planet is obvioulsy astonishing. Never the less, there are some differences.
Happily, i should add :).
There is another epiosode fo Futurama, i don't remember the title, but it's about a planet ruled by women. Planet (or was it only a tribe...? ) is governed by a female-computer. That's quite similar to Lem's Calculator... Considering the fact, that both of these computers are just fakes, it becomes even more similar :)
