Buying Lem and Mróz in Poland
« dnia: Kwietnia 24, 2007, 10:09:54 am »
I'm in Poland for a few days (Krakow right now) and trying to work out where I can get nice first editions of Lem's works (in Polish), particularly those not translated into English. The online book engines don't seem to have coverage of these.

I'd also like to get some prints or art books of Daniel Mróz's work but haven't had much luck. The local booksellers either haven't heard of him, or aren't interested. Maybe I'll have better luck in Warsaw.

I have tried the email link on the Mróz gallery page here but I just keep getting error messages from it.

After a bit of help from folks at Massalit (English-language bookstore in Krakow),I was directed to where to look for Lem books in Polish, and after looking through 6-7 stores found copies of Summa and Solaris in decent condition as souvenirs of Krakow (since neither is (properly) available in English). There were lots of books about Lem (which I wonder if we'll ever see in English) but not many shops had a good selection of his actual works.

None of the bookstores had heard of Daniel Mróz, although several had a book "o poznaniu w tworczosci stanislawa lema" with a Mróz cover which I used to demonstrate who he was, and none were willing to consult their computers for any information on books of his works.

The email link to Mróz relative (daughter?) on the gallery pages here seems to be out of date too.

Will try in Warsaw tomorrow.

I can't help you much, because I don't know Krakow enough well.

But take a look at the following link if you are internested in Daniel Mroz's works:

http://www.lem.pl/english/mroz/mroz.htm

Or take a look at our Polish section dedicated to his works too:

Not much of an improvement in Warsaw. Fewer Lem titles everywhere I looked in central city. One or two antikvariats did have some editions from the 60s-80s (not firsts AFAICT).

Again, no one had heard of Daniel Mróz, even with a picture to prompt them. I picked up a Polish translation of Mervyn Peake's Titus Groan, and saw that the cover illustration was by Lucja Mróz.

Thanks but that is where I got the nonworking email address for Lucja Mroz.

The only other information I have about Daniel is that he seems to have illustrated some children's books, which were also translated into English.

If I were you, I'd look for "Cyberiada" in its early edition. It had illustrations by Mróz all around it :)
You should try all second-hand bookshops and, if that doesn't work, Allegro - internet auction service. The latter requires registering - so You'll need to ask some of Your Polish friends to do it for you, because registration time is longer than few days that You have.
Check this out for example: http://www.allegro.pl/item189021108_cyberiada_stanislaw_lem.html  - this is a copy wiht graphics by Mróz.

Good Luck.

I own early editions of this book in Polish and English. That's one of the reasons I'm trying to find better quality and a wider selection of images by him. I went around second hand bookstores in Krakow and Warsaw and came up empty handed. Massalit is the only Polish dealer in (new or used) books who I have found listing on any of the international second book services on the internet. Often I've got Lem material through German dealers.
